The Patriarchate of Georgia

His Holiness Ilia II
In the 1st century, the church of
Georgia was established by St. Apostle Andrew
and in the 4th century it spread all
over the region through the missionary work of
St. Nina of Capadocia. In the 5th
century, the Patriarchate of Antioch recognized
its independence. But, in 1811, the Russian Tsar
took away its independency in a non-canonical
way. After 1917, the Church of Georgia regained
its historical right to independence. Under the
initiative of the Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios
and the decision of the Holy Synod, on 3rd
March 1990, today’s Patriarch of the whole
Georgia who has the title Catholicos, is Ilias
II appointed on 23rd December 1977.
Today, the Patriarchate of Georgia has 27
bishops, 1004 priests and 65 monasteries.
