The Patriarchate of Bulgaria

His Holiness Maksim
The Orthodox Church of Bulgaria was established
by two brothers St. Cyril and St. Methodios, but
it remained under the jurisdiction of the
Ecumenical Patriarchate until 1945 when it was
recognized as an independent church. In 1953 it
became a Patriarchate and the first Patriarch
was Cyril, succeeded by today’s Patriarch Maxim
on 4th July 1974. Now, the
Patriarchate of Bulgaria has 26 bishops, 1350
priests and 123 monasteries.
