The Church of Cyprus

His Beatitude Chrysostomos II
According to the book “Acts of Apostles”, the
Cypriots were the first people who received
Christianity. In 45, St. Apostle Paul, Barnaba
and Mark were spreading Christianity in Cyprus.
St. Lazar was appointed bishop of Kition (today
Larnaka) after his resurrection. At the 3rd
Ecumenical Council in Ephesus, in 431, the
Church of Cyprus was announced independent in
the 8th canon. Since the 1st
century until nowadays there has been a
catalogue of names of all the bishops and
archbishops in Cyprus. In 1960, after the
elections, Archbishop Makarios became the
president of the Republic of Cyprus, which was a
unique case in the Orthodox Church where one
clergyman was both head of the Church and head
of the country. Unfortunately, from 15th
July 1974 until today, the northern part of
Cyprus, comprising 37% of the whole territory,
has been occupied by Turkey and one third of the
population has been in refuge in the free part
of the country. The appointed successor of
Archbishop Makarios III (1950-1977) was
Archbishop Chrysostom I from 13th
November 1977 to 12th November 2006.
On 12th November 2006, Chrysostom II
was appointed new Archbishop of Cyprus.and
followed by Archbishop Chrysostomos II΄.
that is elected as
Archbishop of Cyprus at 5- 11 -2006. Nowadays
the Synod moved to a historical decision in 2007
(February 12th) It decided to re-establish some
of the old bishoprics. Following the above
decision, the composition of the Holy Synod,
nowadays, is up to 16 members. |
